Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s appearance on the February 21st episode of SmackDown prompted WWE to implement swift creative changes. During the broadcast, Johnson addressed Cody Rhodes, stating his desire for Rhodes to become “his champion” and requesting a decision at Elimination Chamber.

We are also told the involvement of The Rock was literally something that happened last night [Thursday] and internally, the company shifted plans to pivot towards his appearance. This was not something planned far in advance, at all.
The late adjustments to SmackDown created uncertainty within WWE. A talent speaking to Self Made PW’s Ibou remarked that WrestleMania’s direction “was at the mercy of Dwayne.”
