On the most recent episode of WWE RAW, a video package aired where Rusev offered an explanation for his WWE return and his aggressive behavior in recent weeks. He stated he felt compelled by past programming.
“I didn’t wanna do that. I don’t wanna do any of this,” Rusev began, adding, “But I was once programmed by lesser people, too, and I can’t leave my brothers until you all wake up.” He questioned wrestlers seeking fan approval.
Rusev further elaborated on his perceived mission, telling his “brothers”: “it will hurt me to hurt you. But I would rather you fall at my hand than fall out into the abyss.”

This promo followed Rusev’s actions on the May 5th WWE RAW, where he attacked members of Alpha Academy, wrestled Otis, and assaulted Akira Tozawa. Rusev indicated he will continue until his “job here is done” and he can “reclaim my own day.”
