Sabu's Cause Of Death May Take Longer Than Expected Due To Legal Issues

Rob Van Dam reveals legal issues with Sabu’s ex-wife are delaying official findings following the hardcore icon’s passing in May 2025.

Sabu’s Cause Of Death May Take Longer Than Expected Due To Legal Issues

The official determination of Sabu’s cause of death, following his passing in May 2025 at the age of 60, is currently impeded by legal matters related to his unfinished divorce. Rob Van Dam, a close friend, shed light on the situation during an episode of his 1 Of A Kind podcast, explaining the role of Sabu’s ex-wife, Hitomi.

Van Dam stated, “They never got the official divorce. Divorce. Yeah. So, we need her signature for several things. And I don’t want to get too personal on what the holdup is, but it’s everything. And um part of that is the cause of death. And I have gotten to reach her through a mutual friend. Um and she doesn’t want nothing to do with this, but trying to get her to understand that um in the meantime, without her signature, everything is held up.”

Prior to his death, Sabu participated in what was billed as his retirement match against Joey Janela at GCW Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9, an event that occurred in Las Vegas, NV, during the WrestleMania week activities. However, Sabu himself offered a different perspective on the Legion of Skanks podcast just days before he died. “It was my last match, not my final match,” Sabu clarified, adding, “Probably,” when questioned about the possibility of wrestling again.

Concerns about his well-being were also noted by Francine. Speaking on her podcast, she recalled a recent encounter: “He looked tired. He just… but he was there, and he was taking pictures and signing autographs. I just said, ‘Are you okay?’ and he goes, ‘I’m okay. I’m okay.’ But he didn’t look okay to me.”
