A World Heavyweight Championship match between the champion Gunther and the challenger Goldberg has been scheduled for an upcoming WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. The title bout was established after Goldberg made his return during the June 17 episode of WWE RAW and directly challenged Gunther.
In response to the developing situation, Gunther released a statement on social media regarding the events surrounding his recent championship victory.
It was supposed to be my celebration, got spat on instead.
The champion’s comments refer to his title win on the June 9 edition of the program, where he defeated Jey Uso to become a two-time World Heavyweight Champion. Goldberg’s appearance and subsequent challenge occurred during the period following that victory.

This confrontation is set against the backdrop of Goldberg’s impending retirement. In a statement made on his podcast in February 2025, the Hall of Famer confirmed his final match was planned for the summer of 2025.
Reports from mid-June, prior to Goldberg’s return, indicated that WWE was planning an extended program between the two competitors. The plans at that time involved a feud that would feature multiple appearances and culminate with a match in Atlanta in July. An update from the previous week concerning a minor training setback for Goldberg noted that the injury was not considered serious and he was expected to be fit for his return.
