CM Punk recently clarified the intricate meaning behind his prominent Pepsi tattoo, a distinctive piece of body art. During a segment of “WWE Tattooed,” Punk elaborated on how the band Minor Threat, influential in the straight edge subculture, and the carbonated beverage itself, shaped the design.
The story with the Pepsi Tattoo is there is a band called Minor Threat. It started in the early 80s in Washington, DC that’s widely known to have started the straight edge subculture. And the guitarist Brian Baker was asked in an interview I read while I was in detention, ‘Do you have a Coca-Cola tattoo? Why do you have a Coca-Cola tattoo?’ And his response is, ‘I like Coca-Cola.’
Punk further detailed his personal connection, explaining his preference for Pepsi over Coca-Cola, stemming from his Midwestern upbringing.
And I was like, that’s just punk rock right there, you know? Like, I don’t like Coke. I like Pepsi. You know, I’m Midwest kid at heart. So I got a Pepsi tattoo.
He added that the tattoo extends beyond a mere brand preference, serving as a symbol for his straight edge lifestyle and his commitment to abstaining from alcohol. The tattoo has periodically necessitated alterations in WWE video games to circumvent copyright disputes.
