Since his departure from WWE in September 2023, Matt Riddle has cultivated a notable presence on the independent circuit, but a recent interaction with a fan has drawn significant attention. During an appearance at the River City Con on June 10, Riddle was filmed delivering a hard kendo stick shot to the back of a fan who seemingly volunteered for the impact.
A video posted to Riddle’s own Instagram account captures the moment, showing him taking a full swing before connecting with the fan, who stumbles forward from the blow. The footage continues, showing the fan lifting his shirt to reveal deep, red welts across his back. Riddle, smiling, appeared pleased with the outcome, captioning the post:
River City Con wrestling Convention, great success 🤙🏻.
The incident occurs as Riddle continues to build his career outside of WWE, where he has found considerable success. The current MLW World Heavyweight Champion, having won the title in January 2025, Riddle has maintained an active schedule. This includes a match against Alex Kane on June 3 at the Now That’s Wrestling Monday Night Riot event and a run with the NJPW World Television Championship earlier in 2024.
Outspoken Commentary on WWE and Colleagues
Beyond his in-ring activities, Riddle has remained a topic of conversation due to his candid remarks. During a recent interview on June 9, he offered a blunt assessment of CM Punk, stating that Punk “sucks at fighting” and is “b*tch to work with in the back.”
On that same day, he also provided his perspective on WWE’s recent contract dealings, specifically regarding R-Truth’s brief release and subsequent re-signing. Riddle attributed these roster uncertainties to management and financial restructuring under TKO and Endeavor.
This busy and successful post-WWE run, however, is tinged with a sense of regret. Despite his accomplishments, which he previously claimed included selling out “every single indie show I’ve been a part of,” Riddle recently admitted that he “never should have left WWE,” suggesting a complex view of his current career path.
