Vince Russo recently shared his creative perspective on how WWE could have used Charlotte Flair’s return and divorce from Andrade as storyline material. The former WWE head writer expressed these thoughts during an appearance on Sportskeeda’s The Wrestling Outlaws with host Dr. Chris Featherstone and former WWE star EC3.
Russo pointed out that WWE missed an opportunity to fully capitalize on the compelling narrative of Flair’s recovery journey. Charlotte returned at the Royal Rumble on February 1 after spending 14 months sidelined with a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. News of her divorce from Andrade became public two days after the event, though the legal proceedings had concluded in October 2024.
During the podcast discussion, Russo elaborated on how he would have approached the situation from a creative standpoint.

I saw those training videos, and she was a beast. She was training so hard she was crying. It was unbelievable to see. Bro, that’s what should have been used, and then the divorce should have been used, and while she’s fighting for her career, she’s going through this divorce, she’s going through all this. Then, bro, you bring her back, you have Andrade scr*w her. You wanna get her over as a babyface? That’s how you get her over as a babyface!
Russo suggested that combining Flair’s intense rehabilitation process with the personal elements of her divorce could have created a more emotionally resonant storyline. His concept involved using Andrade in a betrayal angle that would position Charlotte as a sympathetic figure with the audience.
Flair’s return at the 2024 Royal Rumble marked her first WWE appearance since December 2023. She won the Women’s Royal Rumble match, securing a championship opportunity at WrestleMania 41.
