WWE has opted against scheduling a John Cena vs CM Punk showdown for Money in the Bank 2025, according to PWInsider Elite sources. While both stars are active, creative teams are reportedly holding the potential dream match for a later date when “the timing is right.”
The decision comes despite multiple factors fueling speculation: Cena’s impending retirement (with only 20+ appearances remaining), Punk’s recent Instagram tease about the WWE Championship, and the 14-year anniversary of their iconic 2011 Money in the Bank encounter.
Instead, early discussions suggest Cena may compete in a tag team format at the June 7 event, possibly alongside musician Travis Scott. This aligns with WWE’s strategy to maximize Cena’s limited dates while building toward a potential Punk clash during his farewell tour.

Punk’s social media jab at Cena’s championship reign—”for now”—indicates ongoing tension between the rivals. However, WWE appears to be prioritizing long-term storytelling over immediate fan service for the July premium live event.
The reported creative direction leaves open the possibility of a climactic Cena/Punk match occurring later in 2025, potentially during SummerSlam season or as part of Cena’s retirement storyline. For now, Money in the Bank will focus on establishing new contenders through its signature ladder matches.
