Questions surrounding Alberto Del Rio’s potential future with WWE following the company’s acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide were addressed by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. This comes as Del Rio recently lost the AAA Mega Championship to El Hijo del Vikingo, who is now set to defend that title against Chad Gable at Worlds Collide, an event for which Del Rio is not currently booked.
Meltzer indicated that opinions on Del Rio within WWE are mixed, with some individuals reportedly “very, very high on him” and others “not very, very high on him.” Ultimately, Meltzer stated, “Basically it comes down to one guy and that’s Levesque, and I don’t know what his thoughts are on Alberto.”
Regarding Del Rio’s attributes, Meltzer commented on his current in-ring standing: “I mean at the caliber of the guys now, he’s not there. Not at all.” However, he acknowledged Del Rio’s strength as a character: “As far as persona? He’s pretty damn good…” Meltzer also pointed to Del Rio’s past, including dropped felony charges from May 2020 for kidnapping and sexual assault due to a missing witness, describing his track record as “Pretty damn bad.” Meltzer added, “But, it is WWE and he does have no convictions and that is very often how they look at it.”

The discussion also touched upon whether WWE needs Del Rio, considering any potential negative publicity. Initial speculation following the AAA acquisition suggested any role for Del Rio would primarily be for the Mexican market under the AAA banner, rather than for WWE’s main programming. As of now, there has been no official word on whether Del Rio will appear at Worlds Collide, and Meltzer concluded with uncertainty: “So, we’ll see.”
