Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently offered his perspective on the booking of a potential match between Randy Orton and current SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis.
Speaking on Sportskeeda Wrestling’s “Legion of RAW” podcast, Russo emphasized that if such a contest were to occur, particularly at a major event like SummerSlam, it would require a dedicated and well-developed storyline.
Russo stated, “I know Orton was pushing for that match at WrestleMania. I know Orton wanted that match at WrestleMania. Here’s the funny thing: they gave Nick that role backstage because they told him he was too old and needed to transition into a mentor. The dude is 37 [sic] years old, give me a break. Nick Aldis has at least five good years left in him. So, if I am going to do something with Nick Aldis and Orton, it is going to be a program and it is going to be a story, and we are going to build it.”
This commentary comes amidst reports and speculation that WWE is considering a match between the 14-time world champion Randy Orton and the 38-year-old Nick Aldis for SummerSlam. The basis for these discussions includes several on-screen confrontations initiated by Orton against Aldis in recent months, including a notable incident at the Backlash premium live event.
Nick Aldis, an active competitor prior to his current WWE role with his last recorded match on September 30, 2023, transitioned to the on-screen position of SmackDown General Manager. Reports suggest he might return to in-ring action for this potential high-profile encounter.
