Kevin Owens’ recent neck injury has derailed plans for what would have been a meaningful final encounter with John Cena. The sidelined superstar shared his frustrations about missing this opportunity during a recent podcast appearance.
Speaking on “My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox,” Owens directly addressed the disappointment of missing Cena’s retirement tour.
One of the things that really hurts about this injury is knowing that I won’t be able to wrestle with John one last time, because that’s not going to happen now. And I was really hoping to do that before he retires. There are matches I’d love to have, like wrestling Finn Balor at WrestleMania, but the one with John was something I really held out hope for.
The timing is particularly meaningful given that Owens made his WWE main roster debut against Cena in 2015. A farewell match would have brought their in-ring relationship full circle as Cena prepares to wrap up his legendary WWE run.
Owens confirmed he’ll remain on the shelf through the remainder of 2025 while preparing for surgery on his injured neck. He has yet to undergo the procedure and hasn’t had extensive discussions with the medical team regarding recovery details. While he expressed interest in other potential matchups, the missed opportunity with Cena clearly weighs heaviest in his current situation.
