AEW President Tony Khan recently took to X/Twitter to announce a significant trios match for the upcoming May 21 episode of AEW Dynamite. The match will feature Jon Moxley teaming with The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) to face the combination of Swerve Strickland, Samoa Joe, and Powerhouse Hobbs.
In his announcement, Khan detailed the matchup and its context: “This Wednesday, 5/21 #AEWDynamite 8pm ET/7pm CT, TBS + Max World Champion @JonMoxley + @youngbucks vs @swerveconfident + World Trios Champions @SamoaJoe + @TrueWillieHobbs After Death Riders injured The Opps’ Shibata, Swerve joins Hobbs/Samoa Joe vs Young Bucks + Mox WEDNESDAY!”
The formation of Strickland’s team with Joe and Hobbs was attributed to an injury sustained by Shibata at the hands of Moxley’s faction, The Death Riders. This newly announced six-man tag team match occurs in the wake of a previous Dynamite Beach Break main event involving Moxley and Samoa Joe which saw interference from multiple other wrestlers. Some reports have suggested this upcoming trios bout could serve as a precursor to Jon Moxley and The Young Bucks potentially collaborating in a future Anarchy in the Arena match, following a challenge from Swerve Strickland.
