Tony Khan Says AEW Grand Slam is a Success Despite Fan Criticism

AEW President Tony Khan addressed the financial success of AEW Grand Slam: Australia during a conversation with Deej of DownUnderTheRing.

This is one of our biggest international events ever. It’s one of our biggest gates in the history of AEW. We’re really excited for that. Outside of Wembley Stadium in London, this is going to be, I believe, our biggest international live gate of all time. It’s a very exciting event for AEW.

The event faced initial controversy when AEW’s official Twitter account incorrectly labeled it as a pay-per-view before making a correction. In response to the confusion, Khan clarified the situation during an interview with Scott Fishman of TV Insider.

Yes. Having this be a TV event has always been the plan. That’s something that the network wanted. It’s something the network brought to us recently as an opportunity to follow NBA All-Star Saturday. We saw it as a huge opportunity. It was a great vote of confidence from our partners at Warner Brothers Discovery. It will be one of the biggest nights of the year on TNT.

The show has achieved this financial milestone despite fans expressing frustration over the venue change from Suncorp Stadium to Brisbane Entertainment Centre, with some unable to secure refunds for their tickets.
