The ongoing situation between Rey Fenix and AEW appears to be reaching a critical juncture, with negotiations for his departure now actively progressing. According to Chris Featherstone, talks between Tony Khan and Fenix are moving forward with resolution expected soon.
Featherstone shared specific details about the current state of negotiations, indicating mounting pressure on AEW’s leadership to resolve the situation.
AEW sources have informed me that negotiations between Tony Khan and Rey Fenix to end Fenix’s tenure with the company are progressing, and resolution is expected to happen soon. I was also informed that Tony Khan has been heavily advised to ‘put an end to this’ soon regarding Fenix’s holding period.
Fenix’s contract status has been complicated by AEW’s decision to add injury time to his deal, effectively extending his commitment despite his expressed desire to leave the company. This contractual maneuver has kept him tied to AEW while he openly seeks an exit.
The situation nearly resolved during AEW’s February roster cuts that saw the departures of several prominent talents including Malakai Black, Ricky Starks, and Miro. Sean Ross Sapp reported that AEW had considered including Fenix in those releases but ultimately decided against it.
I had heard Friday that AEW releases were either happening or coming. At that moment, I thought it was just the Bear Boulder situation, which they fortunately very quickly took care of. I had heard for a while that within AEW, they had at least considered releasing or letting contracts lapse on a few talent that were not happy and wanted to go elsewhere. At one point, they considered Rey Fenix. They didn’t end up doing that.
While Fenix remains under contract with AEW for now, WWE isn’t waiting idly. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE has already begun laying groundwork for Fenix’s potential arrival, despite having no confirmation of his contractual release.
They are making plans for Rey Fenix, although there has been no confirmation Fenix has been released from his AEW contract.
This proactive approach by WWE signals strong interest in bringing the high-flying performer into their fold once his contractual situation with AEW is resolved. For now, Fenix remains in a holding pattern as negotiations continue toward what increasingly appears to be an inevitable departure from AEW.
