The road to WrestleMania 41 almost took a completely different turn, with Cody Rhodes rejecting a drastic character change suggested by The Rock.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the “Final Boss” initially wanted the Undisputed WWE Champion to turn heel and align with him during the build to the event. The idea, however, was rejected by Rhodes, forcing an immediate change to the company’s plans.

The internal sentiment in WWE, widely shared by head of creative Triple H, is that the current audience belongs to Cody.

Officials believe that turning him to the villain side would be a serious mistake and the only thing capable of halting the company’s strong momentum in arenas.

The journalist noted that John Cena was The Rock’s second choice for the alliance. With the 16-time world champion accepting, fans witnessed the shocking heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber in Toronto, Canada.
