Shota Umino is officially out of G1 Climax 36. NJPW announced Wednesday that the star suffered a concussion during his match against Zack Sabre Jr. on July 11, the tournament’s opening night in Chicago.
Umino began showing symptoms during the match itself. After an evaluation and consultation with the medical staff, the promotion decided to pull him from the rest of the tournament, with no timetable given for his return to the ring.
The withdrawal brings a direct change to the B Block standings. Every wrestler still scheduled to face Umino will automatically be awarded two points, with those matches going into the books as forfeit wins. NJPW will also adjust its upcoming match cards as a result.
Umino opened his tournament with a loss to Zack Sabre Jr., leaving him with zero points. This would have been his fourth consecutive G1 Climax appearance since debuting in the tournament in 2023.
The injury comes at a rough time for Umino. Just five days before the tournament kicked off, he lost the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship to Gabe Kidd at Korakuen Hall, ending a reign that began with his win over Andrade El Ídolo.
