Speaking on the SummerSlam Night 2 post-show, Triple H praised Owens’ performance in his return match and said the match with Punk is going to be an epic encounter.
“Which now puts him in the driver’s seat, and after last night makes me immediately think about Kevin Owens and CM Punk, and there is a lot of history there. A lot of history that people have seen, and believe me, a lot of history that is behind the scenes. That is going to be an epic encounter that I can’t wait to see.”
Owens earned the title shot in the opening match of Night 2, when Nick Aldis added Gunther and Owens to the No. 1 contender’s match between Sami Zayn and Finn Bálor, turning it into a Fatal 4-Way. Working his first match in nearly 18 months, Owens hit Zayn with a Stunner and got the pin.
No date has been announced for the title match, but it will be the first singles meeting between Owens and Punk in WWE. Their most notable on-screen interaction came on the January 31, 2025 episode of SmackDown, when they traded verbal shots in the ring and teased a possible WrestleMania match.
Their history away from television goes back further. In 2024, Owens said the two aren’t friends and don’t speak, and their issues date back to ROH in 2005, when Punk criticized Owens for wrestling in a T-shirt.
Punk retained the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes on Night 1 of SummerSlam. With Owens winning the following night, WWE is in position to turn more than 20 years of history into a program over the company’s top title.
