Brock Lesnar has one of the most recognizable entrance themes in WWE history, but the song that has followed the Beast Incarnate since the start of his main roster career wasn’t originally written for him.
During a recent appearance on The False Face Podcast, longtime WWE composer Jim Johnston revealed that he wrote the track for the original version of the XFL, the football league started by Vince McMahon and NBC.
“I wrote it for the XFL,” Johnston said. “I wrote themes for all those teams, and it was a great effort, but it just never sort of clicked. And when Brock showed up, it isn’t like I suggested that. It’s just like suddenly that music showed up for Brock. Sometimes the stars align. Maybe, going back to truth, that music finds its rightful home, because that is perfect for Brock.”
The song was written specifically for the Chicago Enforcers, one of the teams in the XFL’s inaugural season in 2001. The theme was even used for the team’s entrance in a game against the Los Angeles Xtreme before the league folded after just one season.
A little over a year later, Lesnar made his debut on Monday Night RAW in March 2002, accompanied by Paul Heyman. The song was chosen for his entrance and quickly became inseparable from The Next Big Thing character.
The original version of the track was officially released on Nov. 20, 2017, on the album WWE: Uncaged IV, under the title “Enforcer (Brock Lesnar).”
Johnston worked for WWE from 1985 to 2017 and also composed iconic entrance themes for stars including The Undertaker, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, D-Generation X, Batista and Randy Orton.
