WWE has announced a major match for Night of Champions. Cody Rhodes will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Sami Zayn and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match next Saturday, June 27, at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The match was confirmed on this week’s SmackDown from the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Rhodes put the title on the line against Gunther in a rematch, with Zayn serving as the special guest referee.
Zayn was chosen by Gunther himself, who had earned the right to pick a stipulation for the match.
In the closing moments, Zayn made an extremely fast count, allowing Rhodes to retain the title in controversial fashion. Shortly afterward, Nick Aldis ordered the match to be restarted with an official referee.
The second match also ended without a clean result. Zayn returned to the ring and hit Gunther with a Helluva Kick, causing the disqualification. He then struck the referee with the title belt and took out Rhodes as well, leaving both Rhodes and Gunther down in the ring.
That left Aldis with no other choice but to officially add Zayn to the match, turning the rivalry into a Triple Threat Match for WWE’s top championship.
