Add as a preferred source on Google Dave Meltzer ripped into WWE‘s creative team, led by Triple H, over Nick Aldis getting his SmackDown General Manager job back almost immediately after SummerSlam.
Aldis tapped out to Gunther on night one of SummerSlam, then handed Triple H a letter of resignation during the post-show. Triple H tore the letter up on the spot and reinstated him, putting Aldis back in charge of the blue brand for the Aug. 7 SmackDown.
The angle was set up a week earlier on SmackDown, when Aldis signed the contract for the Gunther match. Adam Pearce laid out the terms at the time. Aldis couldn’t work as an active wrestler and run the show at the same time, so the GM spot had to go.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said Triple H’s call wiped out the whole story without paying off any of the fallout from Aldis’ decision.
“Last week, they do this angle, the big angle is, he is giving up his general manager role to do a match, because you can’t do a match and be general manager. One week later, after the match, Triple H says ‘Oh, by the way, you’ve got your job as general manager back.’
“What kind of fucking storytelling is this? I know he’s gonna end up getting the general manager thing back, but tell a story.
“What logic is it that you sign away your general manager job one week ago, you’re done, you do a match… And then he resigns, he sends a letter of resignation because he’s not gonna be a wrestler, and he’s already given up his general manager job, and then Mr Hero Paul Levesque comes in and goes ‘Oh no, no, I’m hiring you back as general manager.’
“If you wanted to do that, why did you do this whole big song and dance about how he can’t be general manager?
“I just think from a storytelling standpoint, there’s no depth to that storytelling. I just thought it was as lame as lame can be.”
Triple H also left the door open for Aldis to work another match down the line when asked about it at the post-SummerSlam press conference.
