Add as a preferred source on Google John Cena wasn’t just looking to get booed during his 2025 heel turn. His strategy was to deliberately take the fun out of the shows and leave fans frustrated with WWE‘s product after the main events.
In Season 3 of WWE: Unreal, which premiered this Tuesday, Cena explained that he needed to find a motivation for the turn that started at Elimination Chamber on March 1, 2025, when he attacked Cody Rhodes and aligned with The Rock and Travis Scott. In his view, the character would be the last representative of the old guard, determined to stand in the way of the new generation.
“What does that mean to ruin wrestling? That means to take the fun away from the fans. That means to win that championship with methodical, catastrophically boring work. To make people like, ‘Fck this guy.’ It was like, ‘That’s it? What a shtty main event.’ Yup, that’s what I was going for. Watch the next one.
“Then I was explaining like that was too boring. That was too bad. I think people are going to stop going. The perspective was, ‘Hey, this isn’t heat on you. This is heat on the company.'”
Cena even suggested that one of his Undisputed WWE Championship defenses end in a countout. Triple H rejected the idea once he realized the negative reaction was no longer directed at the character and had started to hurt the company.
“To some degree, John’s instinct was spot on. John earned the spot to be like, ‘Okay, well let’s take a shot at it.’ But there was a certain point in time I was like, ‘This ain’t working.’ You’ve still got to deliver to these people. Hopefully he’ll do it in a manner that they don’t like that, but you’ve got to give them your greatness still.”
In a December 2025 interview on Insight, Cena had already revealed that the heel turn was not part of the original plan. According to Cena, a storyline that would normally take two years had to be compressed into approximately 20 shows, between February and August.
Cena went on to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship from Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 on April 20, 2025. The “real John Cena” returned on the August 1 episode of SmackDown, two days before he lost the title to Cody in a Street Fight at SummerSlam.
