Paul Heyman said he learned more from Roman Reigns than he was able to teach him during their time together in WWE. Heyman believes no one else could have taken Brock Lesnar’s place in his career.
Heyman was a guest on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, where he explained why he sees Reigns as the most transformative talent he has worked with. He praised Reigns’ knowledge of the ring and said he mainly helped Reigns figure out the right time to speak.
“Because there is no one else I could have followed up my run with Brock Lesnar with than Roman Reigns. As an athlete, top tier, 100%. Top tier. Great athlete. As a performer, his knowledge of being inside that ring is second to none.”
On what he learned from their partnership, Heyman continued:
“I’ve learned more from Roman Reigns than Roman Reigns has learned from his Wise Man. He knows what to say. I think I added when to say it. But I’ve learned more from him than he has ever learned from me.”
Heyman wrapped up his answer by explaining why he chose the Tribal Chief name and how he viewed Reigns’ relationship with WWE fans. He added:
“He is the Tribal Chief. It was the easiest name I’ve ever come up with. He is a Tribal Chief and the WWE Universe is his tribe. He has created an island of relevancy that, when you are with him, you are relevant because you are in the presence of Roman Reigns.”
The two were free to disagree with each other creatively. Heyman told Sports Illustrated in March 2024 that each of them had the right to turn down the other’s ideas and look for something different when an idea wasn’t working.
Reigns has also given Heyman credit for his influence on his career. On The Pat McAfee Show in October 2025, Reigns said he “absorbed so much from the former Wise Man,” especially through their conversations on the road with WWE. Reigns joked that he learned so much that he had become the master in their relationship.
