Sami Zayn is in the biggest moment of his WWE career after winning the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions on June 27 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
During a recent interview with ESPN New York, the new world champion was asked about the sacrifices required to reach the top of pro wrestling. Zayn, however, said he has never viewed his career that way.
“You know, I’ve never really looked at it that way. I know that’s like a prevailing narrative, a lot of people talk about that when they talk about our industry, talking about the sacrifices. Like, you know, if you ask my wife, for sure, she would consider them sacrifices. Leaving the family, leaving the kid, missing birthdays, anniversaries, everything like that. It’s been talked about, I’d say ad nauseam at this point. But the truth is, I’ve just never looked at it that way. It’s just a way of framing it. I’ve never seen it as a sacrifice, I really never have. I view it more of a privilege than anything, honest to god.”
The comments came just days after Zayn finally captured WWE’s top title. In the main event of Night of Champions, he defeated Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match, ending the night as the new champion.
During the same interview, Zayn also noted that millions of people would want to be in his position, but only one person currently carries the Undisputed WWE Championship. For him, that makes the experience hard to fully comprehend.
