Sami Zayn’s reign as Undisputed WWE Champion may no longer be under threat from Brock Lesnar before SummerSlam.
According to Fightful Select, there had been some backstage pessimism in WWE about the possibility of Zayn dropping the title to Lesnar before the August premium live event. However, the current situation indicates that is no longer the plan.
Zayn captured the title at Night of Champions, defeating Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match. The win marked his first world title victory in WWE.
The change in direction is tied to Oba Femi. The King of the Ring winner had the right to challenge Sami Zayn or Roman Reigns at SummerSlam, but he was interrupted by Brock Lesnar on Raw. From there, WWE moved the two toward a Hell in a Cell Match at SummerSlam.
With that, Lesnar no longer appears to be a threat to Zayn’s title, at least for now. The match with Femi also continues the rivalry that began at WrestleMania 42, when The Ruler defeated The Beast Incarnate and opened the door for the first signs of a possible retirement.
SummerSlam will take place on August 1 and 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The location remains important to Lesnar’s story, as he has strong ties to Minnesota and could make one of his final major WWE appearances there.
