SmackDown opens with a video recapping the latest episode of Monday Night RAW, which ended with CM Punk defeating Sami Zayn to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship.

From there, Nick Aldis is standing in the middle of the ring. The Brit announces that his suspension has come to an end and that he’s officially been reinstated as General Manager. Aldis then calls out Punk.

“The Best in the World” receives a massive ovation and heads to the ring, where he greets Aldis. The General Manager welcomes him to SmackDown before handing over the microphone.

Punk reveals that he spent the last few weeks negotiating his move to the blue brand. In the middle of those talks, though, he got a call from Aldis this past Monday, letting him know the brand needed a substitute to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship.

Punk says he didn’t have to think twice. He threw on his ring gear, got in his car and drove straight to the arena. Now, just days later, he’s on the blue brand with the title in his possession.

Punk promises to defend the title whenever he gets the chance. He knows the blue brand’s locker room is loaded with hungry competitors, so he’s decided to make it simple for everyone: anyone who believes they have what it takes to take the title from him just has to step into the ring and challenge him.

Punk reveals that he also heard Sami Zayn’s comments after Monday’s match. The champion acknowledges that the Canadian deserves a rematch, but makes it clear there’s no shortage of potential challengers.

Punk brings up his history with Gunther and says he wouldn’t have any problem putting the title on the line against the Austrian. Finn Bálor, Royce Keys, and Trick Williams also make the champion’s list. Cody Rhodes interrupts the segment!

“The American Nightmare” heads to the ring and takes a look at Punk’s black eye before asking for a microphone. Punk knows Rhodes isn’t there to talk about his eye. Rhodes then brings up a conversation the two had weeks earlier, when he warned Punk to keep an eye out for opportunities that might land right in his lap.

Punk knows exactly what Rhodes wants: a title shot. Punk admits he’d hoped that matchup would happen at WrestleMania, but acknowledges the two of them can’t keep avoiding the inevitable.

The champion asks when Rhodes wants to face him. “SummerSlam!” Cody fires back. The two stand face-to-face and seal the deal with a handshake. Nick Aldis wastes no time making the match official.

Punk raises the title in front of Rhodes before leaving the ring and heading backstage, closing out the segment.

Cathy Kelley interviewed Jade Cargill, B-Fab, and Michin backstage. Kelley asked Cargill about her match against Alexa Bliss, set for later tonight. Cargill said she’s ready to play the game that Charlotte Flair started. “The Queen” cost her the Women’s United States Championship, and now Flair will pay for it by watching her partner get torn apart.

Michin pointed out that the trio has already turned Charlotte’s life into a living hell, but she keeps pushing back anyway — which is why Michin believes Flair still has a few lessons left to learn. B-Fab said she hopes Charlotte is watching when Cargill splits her small, fragile friend in half.

Cargill wrapped things up by making clear she won’t be responsible for whatever happens to Bliss tonight. All the blame falls on Charlotte Flair. The three then left, closing out the segment.

Singles Match: Finn Bálor vs. Tama Tonga w/ Talla Tonga
– Bálor lands a “Coup de Grace” on Tonga, followed by a pinfall.

Cathy Kelley interviews Carmelo Hayes backstage, where Hayes says he’s already proven more than enough that he deserves a shot at the WWE United States Championship. After taking aim at Lil Yachty, Hayes vows to defeat Trick Williams tonight to prove what his rival already knows.

Elsewhere backstage, R-Truth hands over cash to Axiom and Nathan Frazer after losing a bet. Wearing Spain and England jerseys, respectively, the two Europeans celebrate while Truth still can’t understand how the U.S. was eliminated from the World Cup.

Axiom and Frazer leave, and The War Raiders approach to ask Truth about tonight’s Winner Take All Match. Before he can answer, Jimmy Uso and Jacob Fatu interrupt the conversation. Erik and Ivar walk away, but not before warning that their patience is running out.

Jimmy asks about Solo Sikoa, and Truth tells him Sikoa isn’t in the building tonight. Fatu then asks about Royce Keys, but Truth insists he’s never seen him. Damian Priest shows up and reveals that Keys is actually in the building. Jimmy and Fatu take off immediately to track him down. Truth questions Priest for giving up the information. Priest makes it clear that Royce Keys isn’t his problem.

Backstage, Gunther confronts Nick Aldis. “The Ring General” tells the general manager he’s already made a big mistake on just his first day back in charge of SmackDown. Still, Gunther says he’ll give him a chance to fix it, since they both know he deserves a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam. Aldis tells him he’ll take the request under consideration, and the segment ends there.

Jimmy Uso and Jacob Fatu head to the ring. Jimmy wants to get straight to business and demands that Solo Sikoa come out right now. Instead, it’s Royce Keys who shows up.

Royce wants to know why the Samoans won’t stop bringing up his name. Keys says The Bloodline’s family issues are spilling over into SmackDown and now affecting his own life, too. Jimmy fires back that they’re handling business for the “OTC”, but Royce points out that Roman Reigns isn’t even there.

Fatu quickly gets right in Keys’ face and tells him not to bring up “The Tribal Chief.” Jimmy also warns that Keys has no business giving them orders since he isn’t part of the family. Keys repeats what he said last week: blood isn’t what makes someone family.

Jimmy warns him again, but Keys points to the line separating them and makes it clear he plans to cross it. Jimmy vows that he and Fatu are going to beat Keys down, but Fatu says that has nothing to do with him and walks out of the ring.

Jimmy has no problem handling it on his own and asks Nick Aldis to send out a referee. “Big Jim” tries to catch Royce off guard before the match can even start, but Keys blocks the attack and sends him flying out of the ring with a clothesline.

Singles Match: Royce Keys vs. Jimmy Uso
– After a distraction caused by a brawl between Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu at ringside, Jimmy seizes the opportunity to hit a Spear on Keys, followed by a pinfall.

Fatu brings Sikoa into the ring and goes after him, but Keys steps in. Fatu answers with a Superkick and immediately finishes him off with a Senton.

“The Samoan Werewolf” then sets up a steel chair in front of Sikoa and threatens to crush him with a Running Hip Attack. Before leaving the ring, Fatu delivers an ultimatum: Sikoa must show up on RAW next Monday, or next time, he won’t stop. Jimmy and Fatu then leave the ring, closing out the segment.

Cathy Kelley catches up with CM Punk backstage. The Best in the World hopes the entire roster is angry about Cody Rhodes getting a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship, because he wants to see everyone lining up to challenge him.

Candice LeRae interrupts the interview alongside Johnny Gargano, who’s still laid out on an equipment case, as usual. LeRae confronts Punk over what he did to Sami Zayn, the only man who still believed in her husband. She calls Zayn the true voice of the voiceless and points out that during the nine days the Canadian held the title, there was still hope for the company’s underdogs — including her and Gargano. But Punk put an end to all of that.

The champion says he’s proud of himself. Punk tells LeRae and Gargano to knock it off and get back in the ring, because that’s where they belong. The Best in the World is getting ready to leave the building, but comes face-to-face with a smiling Finn Balor. The two exchange pleasantries before going their separate ways.

Fatal Influence show up in a promotional video. Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid promise that, next week, they’ll be crowned the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. The duo vows to finish off Paige and Brie Bella — who they call two fading legends — right there at Madison Square Garden.

Singles Match: Alexa Bliss c/ Charlotte Flair vs. Jade Cargill w/ Michin and B-Fab
– Cargill lands a “Jaded” on Bliss, followed by a pinfall.
