CM Punk, the current Undisputed WWE Champion, had some sharp words for how certain talent judge their own performances.
During a recent appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s “What’s Your Story?” podcast, Punk was asked what he would change about WWE right now. He said he’d like to see more seriousness and honest evaluations backstage, instead of automatic praise. Punk pointed out that some wrestlers chase immediate approval from their peers, then turn to social media to gauge how their match was received.
“The dissonance between what wrestling Twitter says or what actually happens in a live building, it boggles my mind. Get off your phone stop checking twitter see how good your match was did you listen to the crowd? thats your boss,” Punk said.
“The difference between what people say on twitter and what you hear in a live building is completely different,” he added.
McMahon agreed with Punk, adding that even empty seats in an arena send a clear message to wrestlers.
The comments come at a high point for Punk. On July 6 in Chicago, he returned to WWE programming and defeated Sami Zayn to win the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Punk will defend the title against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. Before that, though, the two will team up against Sami Zayn and Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event, at Madison Square Garden.
