Add as a preferred source on Google CM Punk and Cody Rhodes are finally going to collide in WWE. The long-awaited showdown was confirmed for SummerSlam, set for August 1-2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The announcement came during this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown. Punk opened the show in his first appearance as Undisputed WWE Champion and named Sami Zayn, Gunther, Finn Bálor, Damian Priest, Royce Keys, and Trick Williams as potential challengers.
Cody Rhodes, however, interrupted the segment and brought up their confrontation on the first Raw after WrestleMania 42. At the time, still champion, Rhodes told Punk: “Just say when.”
With the roles now reversed, Punk threw the line back at Rhodes and asked when he wanted his title opportunity. Rhodes wasted no time pointing to SummerSlam as the perfect stage.
Punk won the Undisputed WWE Championship this past Monday in Chicago. Gunther attacked Rhodes before the main event, leaving him unable to face Sami Zayn, which brought the “Best in the World” back after nearly three months away to take his place. Punk defeated Zayn, ending his reign after just nine days.
SummerSlam’s card already includes Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship, Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi in a Hell in a Cell Match, and Liv Morgan defending the Women’s World Championship against IYO SKY.
