The Undisputed WWE Champion discussed the idea during the July 27 edition of Busted Open, which aired as part of the first day of WWE Radio on SiriusXM.
Speaking with Dave LaGreca and Bully Ray, Punk said alignment is ultimately determined by the people watching, not simply by how a wrestler wants to be presented.
“The good guy, bad guy thing is decided by the audience. It’s their perspective. I think I’m an incredible black hat that people love so much, it wouldn’t work. I’d still get cheered. It would defeat the purpose. It’s a real double-edged sword at this point.”
Punk said elsewhere in the interview that his approach combines being himself with guiding the audience toward a particular reaction. He also pointed to John Cena and Randy Orton as examples of established stars whom fans were reluctant to boo, arguing that the circumstances would have to be right for a similar move involving him.
The timing gives the comments an immediate storyline backdrop. Punk will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes on Night 1 of SummerSlam this Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. It will be their first singles match in nearly 18 years.
Punk won the title from Sami Zayn on July 6 Raw after GUNTHER attacked Rhodes and took him out of the scheduled rematch. Rhodes had already earned the No. 1 contender’s spot by beating Jey Uso following Night of Champions.
