The new Street Fighter movie, which features Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns among the top names in its cast, has gotten off to a rough start with critics.
On Thursday, the film premiered and holds an approval rating of just 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, one day ahead of its official theatrical release on Friday.
The first reviews point to problems mainly with the script, the character development and the way the action scenes are organized. Even so, some critics praised the production’s visuals and the way the film explores the universe of Capcom’s games.
In the movie, Rhodes plays Guile, while Reigns takes on the role of Akuma. The cast also includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Kitao Sakurai directed the film.
Despite the low overall score, the two WWE stars have been receiving praise for their performances, Rhodes in particular. Recently, Andrew Schulz, who also appears in the movie, even revealed that the American Nightmare had his role expanded during filming after impressing those in charge of the production.
The franchise’s previous adaptations, released in 1994 and 2009, also received very negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The initial score, however, is not final yet and could change as new reviews are published, especially after the film opens in theaters.
