Street Fighter debuted at the top of the box office. The new film in the franchise, which has Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes in the cast, grossed $51.1 million worldwide during its opening weekend, according to The Numbers. Of that, $31 million came from the United States and Canada and $20.1 million from the rest of the world.

Distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film opened on Friday in 3,575 theaters and made $13 million on its opening day alone. Of that amount, $4 million came from Thursday preview screenings.

Outside North America, the film was released in 65 markets. The United Kingdom brought in the most, with $3.3 million, ahead of Mexico ($1.8 million) and Australia ($1.6 million).

In Japan, the birthplace of the video game franchise, the reception was cooler. Box office revenue was around $875,000, which put the film in only fifth place in the local rankings.

In the United States, Street Fighter surpassed You Can See Everything. The documentary grossed $15 million and finished the weekend in second place.

Roman Reigns plays Akuma, and Cody Rhodes plays Guile. Hirooki Goto, of NJPW, is also in the film, in the role of E. Honda. With Kitao Sakurai directing, the story follows Ryu and Ken Masters in a new edition of the World Warrior Tournament.

Critics and audiences do not quite agree about the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 41% approval rating among critics and 79% among viewers.

Even in the lead, the opening still falls short of the production budget, estimated at $82 million, not including marketing. To break even, Street Fighter will need to maintain its momentum in the coming weeks.
