Ireland could officially enter the race to host a future WWE WrestleMania. The push is being led by Kilkenny councillor Maurice Shortall, who plans to bring a motion before the Irish government on the matter.
The proposal calls for Kilkenny County Council to contact government ministers and agencies such as Fáilte Ireland and Sport Ireland to assess whether the country has a realistic chance of hosting WWE’s biggest annual event. Shortall believes WrestleMania would deliver a major tourism boost, not only for Dublin but also for secondary regions such as Kilkenny.
Should the idea move forward, Dublin would likely be the frontrunner. Croke Park stands out as the most viable stadium, with a match-day capacity of 83,200 and a status as one of Europe’s largest venues.
“As a globally recognised event with the capacity to attract tens of thousands of international visitors and generate substantial international media exposure, WrestleMania presents a significant opportunity for Ireland to strengthen its position as a leading destination for major event tourism. The wider regional benefit to counties such as Kilkenny would be substantial, with strong potential for tourism spillover, increased domestic travel, and enhanced international visibility for Ireland’s secondary tourism destinations. Ireland is well placed to present a credible and competitive bid for WrestleMania, given our strong international tourism brand, proven track record in hosting major events, and global reputation as a welcoming destination.”
The idea also picked up momentum after recent comments from Sheamus. The Irish WWE star said he dreams of wrestling at a WrestleMania in Croke Park and believes WWE could fill the stadium, pointing to the number of Irish names currently on the roster.
WWE has already tested the Irish market in a meaningful way. In August 2025, the company held the first televised SmackDown in Dublin history at the 3Arena as part of its European tour leading into Clash in Paris.
The timing could also work in favor of new international bids. WrestleMania 43 is set for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027, marking the first time the event will be staged outside North America.
