Asuka and IYO SKY will collide in a historic bout at WWE Backlash. The next premium live event runs Saturday, May 9, in Tampa, Florida. Their singles match already sits on the official card.

This marks the first singles match between two Japanese women on a WWE premium live event. The milestone stands as one of the most significant moments for Japan’s women’s division in company history.

The feud has simmered for months. Asuka and SKY have been on a collision course since the “Empress of Tomorrow” turned on her former ally in September 2025. The rivalry escalated on the RAW after WrestleMania 42 when IYO teamed with Rhea Ripley to take down the Kabuki Warriors.

Asuka and IYO SKY also share a deep history predating WWE. Both made their names in Japan, trading the ring at different stages of their careers.

Backlash will also feature Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu. Trick Williams puts the United States Championship on the line against Sami Zayn. John Cena will also return for what is billed as a historic announcement.

Even without gold at stake, Asuka versus IYO SKY carries historic weight. It could easily emerge as one of the night’s most anticipated matches.
