John Cena is officially locked in for WWE Backlash. The next premium live event runs Saturday, May 9, from the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida.
Cena confirmed the appearance on his official X account. He said he’ll use the show to unveil a “historic” announcement after months of planning. The former wrestler also promised the reveal will change the WWE experience for both fans and Superstars.
“It’s official! I’m heading to WWE Backlash. After months of planning and effort, I’m very excited to reveal historic news. I can’t promise it will be perfect, but I can promise it will change the WWE experience for Superstars and fans.”

The buzz centers on an expansion of Club WWE. The company’s new premium fan-experience platform has not been officially tied to the announcement.
Cena had teased a Tampa appearance recently. He hadn’t clarified how big his role would be until now.
2026 is shaping up as a busy year for Cena in WWE. The company has ambitious plans for him that include more appearances down the line.
Cena retired from in-ring competition in December 2025 after losing to Gunther. He has since worked as a WWE ambassador. His last appearance came at WrestleMania 42 where he hosted both nights.
