John Cena, despite still making occasional appearances on WWE programming, has once again made it clear that his in-ring retirement is permanent.
On the latest Monday Night RAW, Eric André was attacked by Jacob Fatu during a segment involving Roman Reigns and The Bloodline. The comedian was seated in the front row to promote Little Brother, the new Netflix film starring him and Cena.
The situation started when André touched Fatu’s Ula Fala, shortly after Reigns presented the “Samoan Werewolf” with it and officially welcomed him into The Bloodline. Fatu then dragged André into the ring and, on a direct order from the OTC, hit him with two splashes.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Cena was asked why he did not try to save his friend. The former WWE Champion said André knew very well that he had promised to stay away from the ring to protect his health.
“You want to talk to my wife? You want to tell her about that?”

“If you’re my friend and you know I have given my heart and soul and physical well-being to an industry for a quarter of a century and made a promise to friends and loved ones around the world that… pic.twitter.com/h8PGUAME7L
André pushed back, saying that if he saw a friend getting attacked, he would try to help. Cena, however, again brought up Shay Shariatzadeh, his wife, while also pointing to the fans who paid to attend his farewell tour believing they were seeing his final appearances as a wrestler.
“If there isn’t a better example of how retired I am… my friend gets absolutely wrecked by Jacob Fatu…”
Cena closed the subject by reinforcing the same line he has repeated since saying goodbye to the ring:
“Retired, and I mean it.”
Little Brother premieres on Netflix on June 26. It remains unclear whether André will appear on WWE programming again after the attack on RAW.
