CM Punk is back on WWE programming. On Monday’s episode of Raw from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, the “Best in the World” returned to take Cody Rhodes’ place in the main event against Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Zayn was originally scheduled to defend the title against Rhodes, who earned the opportunity by defeating Jey Uso on last Friday’s SmackDown. The match was set to be Zayn’s first defense since winning the title at Night of Champions, where he defeated Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match to capture the first world title of his career.
However, early in Raw, Gunther attacked Rhodes backstage, powerbombing him onto a table before throwing him into a car. The attack left Rhodes bloodied and unable to compete, forcing Adam Pearce to keep his promise of a title match in Chicago with a different opponent.
Later, Sami was told that Cody was out of the match, but that he would still have to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship in the main event.
As Zayn made his way to the ring for the main event, Punk’s music hit to a huge reaction from the crowd.
At the time of this writing, the match between Punk and Zayn was still ongoing. Stay tuned to Wrestling Noticias for more updates.
