MJF has blamed Vince McMahon for the way some fans now view matches where a wrestler puts their hair on the line.
The topic has picked up steam because MJF is set to face Darby Allin at AEW Double or Nothing in a Title vs. Hair match for the AEW World Championship. The event is scheduled for Sunday, May 24, at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing, New York.
In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated’s Jon Alba, MJF was asked about the perception that this type of stipulation has become more comedic.
“You can thank Vince McMahon for that, yeah. It wasn’t comedy in Memphis. It wasn’t comedy in World Class. It wasn’t comedy in Mexico.”
“Listen, I can’t speak for anybody else, all I know is that I make money off this hair, okay? I’m in movies, I’m a top guy in this industry and if I want to be a top guy in this industry, I can’t be bald.”
“Jason Statham can pull it off, I’ve seen what my head looks like with no hair. My junior year of high school, the whole football team got buzz cuts. It wasn’t pretty man and I’m not interested in going back to that. No thank you.”
The match was made official on the May 13 episode of AEW Dynamite, after Darby Allin defended the title against Konosuke Takeshita. MJF then came out to sign the contract and ended up attacking the champion with the Dynamite Diamond Ring.
On this week’s show, Allin defended the title again, this time against Mike Bailey. He won the match, but was once again attacked by MJF.
