MJF was direct when addressing Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods’ recent WWE exit, amid reports that both men turned down a pay cut proposed by the company.
During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, the former AEW World Champion said the two New Day members know their worth and would be major additions to Tony Khan’s roster once they are legally cleared to sign with another company.
The situation picked up steam after the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that fewer than half a dozen wrestlers were approached by WWE about accepting pay cuts. Dave Meltzer also noted that at least one major name agreed to a 50% reduction to remain with the company.
In the case of Kingston and Woods, TKO reportedly offered them less money to finish out their current deals in reduced roles, including in-ring appearances and promotional work. They turned it down and left the company.
MJF said he was not surprised by the decision, saying that if a company asks talent to take cuts, they can naturally say “no.” When asked how he would react if something similar happened during one of his AEW contracts, he said that has never happened.
WWE became part of TKO Group Holdings in September 2023 after its merger with UFC under Endeavor was completed. WWE has also confirmed WrestleMania 43 for 2027 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
With that, it remains to be seen whether Kingston and Woods will actually land on AEW’s radar once their contractual restrictions are over.
