Police in Millvale, Pennsylvania, have released new details on the death of Andy “The Butcher” Williams, who suffered a medical emergency during an Enjoy Wrestling event on Saturday, September 5. Williams was 48.
The department’s statement, provided to POST Wrestling by Police Chief Tim Komoroski, says officers were dispatched to Mr. Smalls Theatre at around 8:45 p.m. The call came after a report that a wrestler had hit his head on a ring post.
When officers arrived, Williams was unconscious and being treated by two doctors who were working the show. Shortly before Ross/West View EMS arrived, Williams stopped breathing, and those on the scene began CPR and used an AED.
Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts and took Williams to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:43 p.m.
Police found no visible signs of trauma and no indication of foul play. An autopsy has already been performed by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, but the cause and manner of death remain pending while additional testing is completed.
The police account also leaves some uncertainty about exactly what Williams hit. Police said they were called after a report that he struck his head on a ring post. Earlier, Enjoy Wrestling co-owner Kurt Hackimer told KDKA-TV that Williams fell at ringside after his match and hit his head on the floor.
Hackimer said Williams was conscious but unresponsive when the doctors began treating him. His condition deteriorated quickly and he lost his pulse. According to Hackimer, the medical personnel on hand felt the symptoms were consistent with a possible cardiac event, though that hasn’t been established as the official cause of death.
Williams had just wrestled alongside longtime tag team partner The Blade against TME. After his collapse, Enjoy Wrestling ended the show early and cleared the building.
