Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano helped deliver a major milestone for Netflix this past weekend.
According to numbers released by the platform itself, 17 million viewers worldwide watched the fight between the two, while the night’s top three bouts averaged 12.4 million viewers.
The event took place this past Saturday, May 16, at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, and marked the first live MMA broadcast in Netflix history.
The show was promoted by Most Valuable Promotions, the company led by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian.
In the main event, Rousey defeated Carano in just 17 seconds, finishing the fight with her signature armbar. It was the former WWE and UFC star’s return to MMA after nearly a decade away.
Beyond Rousey vs. Carano, the show also featured several names familiar to fans, including Nate Diaz, Mike Perry, Francis Ngannou, Philipe Lins and Junior dos Santos. Perry defeated Diaz by medical stoppage, while Ngannou knocked out Lins.
After the win, Rousey again indicated that this was her final fight. Even so, the strong viewership performance could lead Netflix and MVP to keep investing in new MMA events in the coming months.
