Trick Williams faced his first big test as United States Champion at WWE Backlash this Saturday in Tampa, and managed to walk away with the title still in hand.
The champion took on Sami Zayn in a rematch from WrestleMania 42, where he had captured the belt on April 19 after hitting the Trick Shot to end the Canadian’s second title reign.
The rivalry carried into the event after weeks marked by the bizarre involvement of the Gingerbread Man and Lil Yachty. On the previous SmackDown, WWE showed Williams and Yachty setting up an ambush on Zayn during the character’s funeral.
At Backlash, Zayn tried to win back the title by exploiting that very distraction. The former champion used a candy cane kendo stick on Trick while Lil Yachty argued with the referee, but couldn’t get the pinfall.

Later, Yachty tried to make up for it and struck Zayn with the same weapon while the referee was checking on Williams. The payback came at a cost. Sami attacked the rapper on the outside, hit him again with the kendo stick, and even landed a Helluva Kick.
Back in the ring, Zayn went for another Helluva Kick to finish Trick off. The champion, however, dodged out of the way and fired back with the Trick Shot, followed by the pinfall, retaining the United States Championship.
With the win, Williams picks up his first successful title defense on the main roster. It remains to be seen whether Zayn will continue challenging for the belt or if WWE will wrap up the rivalry after two straight losses.
