Roman Reigns is still the World Heavyweight Champion. In the main event of WWE Backlash, held this Saturday in Tampa, the OTC defeated Jacob Fatu in his first title defense since winning the championship from CM Punk at WrestleMania 42.

The match had been built as a major family threat to Reigns ever since the post-WrestleMania RAW, when Fatu made it clear he didn’t just want the title — he wanted everything the Tribal Chief has in WWE. The following week, both men signed the contract for Backlash after yet another confrontation involving Adam Pearce.

In the ring, Fatu delivered one of the most dominant performances of his entire WWE run. Still, Reigns weathered the Samoan Werewolf’s pace and had to hit three Spears to finally get the pinfall and keep the championship.

The win, however, didn’t end the night on a quiet note for the champion. Right after the match, Fatu snapped and locked in the Tongan Death Grip on Reigns, leaving him laid out in the center of the ring.

The referees and officials who tried to restrain Fatu were met with chaos. The challenger attacked several people, including General Manager Adam Pearce, before turning his attention back to the World Heavyweight Championship.

Backlash went off the air with Fatu holding up the title over Reigns, making it clear — despite the loss — that the rivalry between the two is far from over.
