Monday’s episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, held at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, underwent a major change.
Cody Rhodes had been advertised to challenge Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship in a rematch from Night of Champions. WWE had promoted the match as Zayn’s first title defense after his win over Rhodes and Gunther, when he captured the first world championship of his career.
However, right at the start of the show, Gunther attacked Rhodes backstage. The Ring General powerbombed Cody through a table, then threw him into Sami Zayn’s car, leaving The American Nightmare bleeding.
During the show, Cody was evaluated by WWE’s medical team. The doctor said he could not clear him based only on that initial examination, leading Adam Pearce to send Rhodes for further testing.
Rhodes was later not cleared, and the match between Cody and Sami was canceled. Zayn, for his part, did not seem pleased with the situation. The champion said he did not wish anything bad on Rhodes and had hoped to make the defense, though he also admitted he did not understand why he had to put the title on the line on Raw.
Pearce, however, made it clear that he had promised the Chicago crowd a title match, and that Zayn would still defend the Undisputed WWE Championship in the main event.
As of this writing, it is still unknown who will challenge Zayn for the title.
