- CM Punk and Cody Rhodes will come face-to-face for the first time following their altercation at Fanatics Fest;
- Gunther will speak about his match against Nick Aldis at SummerSlam;
- Charlotte Flair vs. Nia Jax – SummerSlam Ladder – Qualifying Match;
- Chelsea Green vs. Kiana James – SummerSlam Ladder – Qualifying Match;

This week’s show opens with footage of several of the night’s top names arriving at the arena, including Cody Rhodes, CM Punk and Fatal Influence.
Nick Aldis and Adam Pearce are in the ring. Pearce announces that he will serve as the referee for Aldis’ match against Gunther at WWE SummerSlam. Pearce then calls Gunther to the ring, and his music hits.
As soon as Gunther entered the ring, Pearce informed Aldis that he would be relieved of his duties as SmackDown General Manager, at least until his match against Gunther. WWE would also not be held responsible for anything that might happen to him.
Aldis said he understood all the risks and clauses before signing the document. He explained that Gunther had pushed him too far and that he believed he was making the right decision.
Before adding his signature, Gunther told Aldis that this would be the biggest match of his career. For Gunther, however, the match meant nothing. He said he should be challenging for the Undisputed WWE Championship, but Aldis had failed to do his job properly.
Gunther then signed the contract and said Aldis’ jealousy would cost him dearly at SummerSlam. Despite having a notable reign as NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion, Aldis never became a major star, and Gunther vowed to end his career.
Gunther was about to leave the ring when Aldis picked up the microphone again. Aldis said he had nothing to lose and that, despite what Gunther believed, the Austrian would become known as the guy who was taken out by his own boss.
An enraged Gunther tried to attack Aldis, but Aldis fought him off with several punches. The Ring General then shoved him into Adam Pearce before hitting Aldis with a low blow.
Gunther followed with a powerbomb that sent Aldis crashing through the table, bringing the opening segment of the night to a close.
Backstage, Sami Zayn interrupted Cathy Kelley and addressed the camera, venting his frustration over recent events. Zayn claimed WWE’s general managers had been working against him and said he could not believe CM Punk and Cody Rhodes were facing each other at SummerSlam.
Adam Pearce approached Zayn and said he understood his frustration. Pearce then announced a Fatal 4-Way Match for later in the night, with the winner advancing to face Zayn in a No. 1 Contender’s Match for the title at SummerSlam.
Fatal Influence’s music hit, and Jacy Jayne, Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley made their way to the ring. Jayne took the microphone and praised her stablemates for winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship last week.
Jayne said she was frustrated about being the only member of the group without a title, but vowed to take the Women’s United States Championship from Tiffany Stratton.
Singles Match: WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Lainey Reid w/ WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Fallon Henley and Jacy Jayne vs. Brie Bella w/ Paige
– Brie hits a roll-up on Reid, winning the match.
After the match, Fatal Influence attacked Paige and Brie Bella. Nikki Bella’s music then hit, and The Fearless Superstar headed to the ring, sending Lainey Reid, Fallon Henley and Jacy Jayne scrambling out of the ring.
Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed Finn Bálor, who looked back on SummerSlam 2016, when he became the first WWE Universal Champion but suffered an injury in the process. Gunther interrupted and mocked Bálor, pointing out that it had been 10 years since he became a world champion. The Austrian said he would be the next world champion.
Backstage, Solo Sikoa fired up Royce Keys ahead of tonight’s Fatal 4-Way Match. Keys said his main focus remained on The Bloodline, though he understood the importance of the match later in the show. LA Knight wished Keys luck but warned him to keep an eye out for The Bloodline.
Elsewhere backstage, Tiffany Stratton encouraged Chelsea Green ahead of her upcoming qualifying match. Green said she could already picture herself winning at SummerSlam and becoming the new Interim WWE Women’s Champion. Stratton wished her luck before Green walked away.
Blake Monroe then approached Stratton and said she should be more concerned with the Women’s United States Championship than Green. Monroe added that Stratton needed to show what made her shine.
SummerSlam Ladder – Qualifying Match: Chelsea Green vs. Kiana James
– Green hits a Unprettier on James, followed by a pinfall.
Backstage, R-Truth spotted Damian Priest warming up and assumed he was preparing to face the War Raiders for the WWE and AAA World Tag Team Championships.
Cody Rhodes then approached Priest and told him that he would be the next Undisputed WWE Champion. Priest said he was tired of seeing the same faces at the top and was ready to return to the title picture. Despite the circumstances, Rhodes said he respected Priest’s attitude.
