CM Punk’s loss to Sami Zayn on the September 11 SmackDown could reshape the top rivalries on the blue brand. In Mexico City, Zayn won back the Undisputed WWE Championship after Kevin Owens accidentally hit Punk with the title belt, setting up the Helluva Kick that sealed the match.
Based on how the last few weeks have played out, there are at least three possible creative reasons behind the decision.
3 – Strengthening Sami Zayn’s Character
Since losing the title to Punk, Zayn had been complaining about injustice and interfering in every match involving the championship. WWE itself presented that relentless pursuit as the reason Punk agreed to face him again.
Another loss would have limited where this character could go. With the win, Zayn now has the title to back up his attitude and taunt the rivals he’s wronged over the past few weeks.
The result also protects Punk. During the match, Zayn tapped out in the Anaconda Vice while the referee was distracted. In other words, WWE gave Zayn the championship and kept Punk’s case for a rematch intact.
2 – Adding Fuel to the CM Punk–Kevin Owens Rivalry
In August, Zayn hit Owens with the title belt during Owens’ championship match, helping Punk retain. Now, Owens tried to take out Zayn and accidentally cost Punk the title instead.
That sequence gives WWE a way to deepen the tension between the two. Punk has reason to demand answers, while Owens can blame Zayn for the whole mess.
A personal feud between Punk and Owens could carry on without the title, leaving Zayn free for other high-profile matches.
1 – Opening New Paths in the Title Picture
Before the main event, Johnny Gargano demanded the first title shot if Zayn won. Zayn agreed, creating a commitment that creative can now build on.
Randy Orton also declared on the same show that he’s coming for the championship. With Zayn as champion, WWE can develop those challenges while Punk sorts out his issues with Owens.
The challenge will be following through. Zayn needs meaningful title defenses so his second reign can stand on its own, beyond the interference that got him there.
