CM Punk closed out the September 18 episode of SmackDown standing tall. He hit both Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens with the GTS at the Hilliard Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Earlier in the show, Zayn had put the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line against Owens in the main event, with Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano getting involved to distract the referee. It was Gargano who did the real work, getting Zayn’s foot on the rope to keep Owens from winning the title.
Punk appeared late in the match and blasted Owens with the title belt itself. Zayn pounced, landing the Helluva Kick and picking up the pinfall to keep the title.
Punk wasn’t finished. He went after Zayn once the bell rang and hit him with a GTS, then turned around and did the same to Owens, standing tall as SmackDown went off the air.
Punk and Owens had already met for the same title once before, on the August 21 episode of SmackDown in Toronto. Zayn hit Owens with the belt that night after Owens turned down his help, clearing the way for Punk to win with a GTS. Zayn then attacked both men once the match was over.
Zayn took the title back from Punk just last week in Mexico City, in a finish that once again involved Gargano, LeRae and Owens.
Punk’s already booked for a Money in the Bank Qualifying Match against Gunther and Finn Bálor on next week’s SmackDown.
