AEW made a fairly unexpected change to its plans for MJF and Kenny Omega, moving a potential pay-per-view match to the next episode of Dynamite.

On the latest episode of the show, MJF defended the AEW World Championship against Mark Briscoe, who had earned the opportunity at Forbidden Door after his team defeated Friedman’s team inside the Death’s Door Steel Cage Match. The champion retained after escaping an Avalanche Jay Driller and hitting a Heatseeker.

After the match, MJF tried to keep attacking Briscoe, but Omega interrupted him. The former AEW World Champion asked for another title shot and was given a harsh condition: if he loses at Beach Break, he can never challenge for the world title again as long as Friedman is champion.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the decision, making it clear that the change appeared to have been made in recent days.

Dave Meltzer said:

“What’s the story with the Omega match on next Wednesday’s show? And Takeshita/Kyle Fletcher, which were supposed to be major pay-per-view matches. I’m not complaining. I’m just saying, what’s going on?”

Bryan Alvarez responded:

“All I know is they decided to move the MJF/Kenny Omega match up. I have no idea why… this was apparently something that was decided very recently. Clearly. Because it’s a Canadian show called Redemption and that was the match, and then somebody decided that we’re doing it next week.”

The situation stands out because AEW Redemption, the company’s new pay-per-view, will take place on July 26 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Before the change, there had been strong expectations that Omega could challenge for the world title at the event in front of the Canadian crowd.

Next Wednesday’s Dynamite Beach Break will also feature Konosuke Takeshita defending the AEW International Championship against Kyle Fletcher, Chris Jericho vs. Tommaso Ciampa, and a Women’s Casino Gauntlet Match for a shot at the women’s title at Redemption.

It remains to be seen whether AEW simply loaded up its weekly special or if the company is preparing a new direction for the Redemption card.
