AJ Styles was another WWE name to speak out about the company’s recent wave of releases, which hit main roster talent as well as members of key factions.
Speaking on Phenomenally Retro, the WWE Hall of Famer talked about the departure of JC Mateo, the name used by Jeff Cobb during his short stint with the company. Styles was emphatic in saying he doesn’t understand the decision, though he admits the company must have its reasons.
“Jeff is awesome. Again, I don’t understand it, but I’m sure there’s reasons. I’m sure that WWE has their reasons, not sure what they are, they seem to be doing pretty well right now, but there’s always reasons for everything.”
Mateo left WWE alongside Tonga Loa. Both were moved to the Alumni section of WWE’s official website, officially marking the end of their time with the company.
The release stands out because Cobb came into the company in 2025 with a pretty strong résumé. Before WWE, he had stints in NJPW, ROH, PWG, and Lucha Underground, and also represented Guam at the 2004 Olympics.
His debut took place at Backlash 2025, where he interfered in the United States Championship match and helped Jacob Fatu retain the title against LA Knight, Drew McIntyre, and Damian Priest.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plans for Mateo were much bigger, including a possible solo run against top names. However, he ended up becoming just another member of the MFT.
