Gunther has taken another shot at Cody Rhodes on social media, this time comparing him to soccer star Lionel Messi and suggesting the “American Nightmare” has had a lot of privileges in WWE.

In a video posted to Instagram, the Ring General said, “Here comes the Lionel Messi of WWE. He gets everything handed to him.”

Gunther has been criticizing Rhodes’ career since the build to Clash in Italy, when he called him a symbol of the “American Dream in ruins” and claimed that several of the opportunities Rhodes got were just a phone call away.

The rivalry between the two already includes three significant matches. Rhodes defeated Gunther at Crown Jewel 2024 and beat him again at Clash in Italy on May 31 in a very controversial match. On June 19, Cody won once more after interference from Sami Zayn.

At Night of Champions, Zayn beat Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match to win the Undisputed WWE Championship. Nine days later, Gunther attacked Cody ahead of his rematch, paving the way for CM Punk to step in for the “American Nightmare” and capture the title.

Now, Gunther and Sami Zayn will face CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event this Saturday, July 18, at Madison Square Garden.
