John Cena has once again raised expectations for his appearance at WWE Backlash, which takes place this Saturday in Tampa, Florida.
In a new social media post, the 17-time world champion said he will make an announcement capable of “shaking WWE to its foundation,” with an impact reaching fans, wrestlers, champions and newcomers across the company. Cena had previously said he was bringing “historic” news to the event, something he had been preparing for months.
Backstage and across international outlets, the leading speculation is that the announcement is connected to Club WWE, the company’s new premium subscription program. WWE had already presented the project as a platform offering ticket benefits, exclusive merchandise, special content and fan experiences.

Despite the grand tone, there is no indication that Cena is returning to the ring. According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, his Backlash appearance is part of the star’s new WWE deal, which includes a specific number of dates following his retirement from in-ring competition.
Cena officially retired in December after losing to Gunther, but he remains tied to WWE in a promotional role. He also hosted both nights of WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.
WWE Backlash will take place this Saturday, May 9, at Benchmark International Arena. The card features Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu for the World Heavyweight Championship, Trick Williams vs. Sami Zayn for the United States Championship, Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker, IYO SKY vs. Asuka, and Danhausen teaming with a mystery partner against The Miz and Kit Wilson.
