John Cena’s announcement for WWE Backlash could be bigger than expected.

Over the past few days, the main speculation surrounding the former wrestler was that his appearance at the Tampa premium live event would be tied to Club WWE, the company’s new subscription program. According to Fightful, the internal expectation was that Cena would use the show to promote its launch.

However, in a new update, WrestleVotes stated that there was hope backstage at last night’s SmackDown that the “historic” announcement would go beyond that. A source who spoke to the account also said that, if that is indeed the direction, everything has been kept under strict secrecy internally.

“Backstage at SmackDown last night, there was some internal hope that tonight’s “historic” announcement from John Cena goes beyond anything Club WWE related. That said, according to one source, if that’s the direction, it’s been kept very quiet behind the scenes.”

WWE itself introduced Club WWE in April, promising exclusive ticket pre-sales, proprietary merchandise, bonus content, a members-only forum, a points system, and more. The company also mentioned Cena’s Never Seen 17 collection as part of the future benefits.

Backlash takes place this Saturday, May 9, at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida, as the first WWE premium live event after WrestleMania 42.
